What do I need to know about renting an RV?

Nothing really; you just need to know where you want to spend your vacation in it! Below you will find all sorts of questions that have been asked with answers explaining everything you would need to know about renting an RV or motorhome. If you decide to use another RV rental company, these questions are all very important to have answers to before you ever pickup the RV.

Does the RV rental come with fuel?

Yes! The fuel is topped of before you pickup the RV rental. You have to bring the RV back with a full tank of gas. If not there is a fee associated with filling it up. If for some reason the tank wasn’t filled at arrival, take a photo of the gauge to show an accurate reading.

Does the RV rental come with propane?

Yes! The propane is topped of before you pickup the RV rental. **As of January 2022 we have modified our propane policy.** You are no longer required to bring the RV back with the propane full; this is now included in our prep fee. Previous policy: You have to bring the RV back with a full tank of propane. If not there is a fee associated with filling it up. If for some reason the tank wasn’t filled at arrival, take a photo of the gauge to show an accurate reading.

Does the RV rental come with water?

Yes. The water is topped off before you pickup the RV rental. The only exception is in the winter while the RV is winterized, see below. **As of January 2022 we have modified our water policy.** You are no longer required to return the RV full of water, this is now included in our prep fee. Previous policy: You have to bring the RV back with a full tank of water unless told otherwise. If not there is a fee associated with filling it up. If for some reason the tank wasn’t filled at arrival, take a photo of the gauge to show an accurate reading. If you are renting in Colorado during the summer and fall season, the same rule applies; you will have running water. If you are renting between October and May in Colorado, there will be no running water and the tank will not be filled.

Where do I pick up the RV rental?

Please see the description of each RV rental to determine where to pick the unit up.

What are the pickup times and return times?

If the RV rental is not being returned on the day of your rental, you can pickup the RV rental as early as 9am. Otherwise you can pickup the RV rental starting at 2pm. We schedule in one hour increments. If you are not on time for your departure you will be assessed a fee. Return times are at 11am. NO EXCEPTIONS. If you cannot return the RV by 11am, then you will be assessed fees according to the time you return the RV rental. Please read the rental contract for specifics. The reason for the fees is that there may be more than one RV being rented that day and Hightened Path RV has a schedule to keep with other RVs being rented. If you are returning the RV on Sunday, we can accommodate a later return than 11AM.

Can I come and see the RV rental before reserving?

In most cases yes, but most of the time the RV is currently rented out. Please contact Hightened Path RV to schedule a meeting.

How long does it take to show me how to use everything?

This can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on a few things. If you watched the videos, pre-read the legal documents, have already rented a motorhome or are familiar with them, then the time will drastically decrease.

Is insurance provided with the RV rental?

No. You will need to provide your own insurance through a binder. Otherwise you can purchase Hightened Path RV's commercial insurance. Prices vary from $10 ~ $35 per day. Prices subject to change based on the insurance policy. See the RV rentals description for specific prices.

Are my valuables covered under the commercial insurance policy?

No. No personal items are covered under Hightened Path RV’s insurance policy. Hightened Path RV is not liable for any personal belongings while you are renting the RV. Hightened Path RV recommends you secure your valuables or do not bring them along.

Is there a deposit needed to reserve the RV rental?

Yes. A valid credit or debit card to cover the first two nights up to $300, whichever is less.

Are there any other fee’s associated with the RV rental?

All RV rentals have a prep fee (preparation), tax, Colorado road tax (CRT) and a processing fee. Tax is generally 8.25%. The prep fee ranges and covers a handful of things for the preparation of the rental. This includes restocking cleaning supplies, toilet paper, return inspection, routine cleaning, washing linens, dumping the tanks, filling the water, topping off propane, thorough cleaning, and the walk-through process. The Colorado road tax is based upon each states DOT tax; currently Colorado is $2.00 per day. The processing fee is 3% to process the RV reservation.

Is there a damage / security deposit needed to rent the RV?

Yes. All of Hightened Path RV’s require a credit hold of $1500 for a Class C and $2000 for a Class A. Trailers and towables range from $500 ~ $1000. This is to cover the insurance deductible in the event of a claim and any minor replacement or repair costs if the vehicle is damaged. This is only an authorization on your credit card and is not taken until time of pickup; similar to a hotel or car rental.

Why is your damage / security deposit higher than other places?

The first reason is our insurance deductible is $1000. The second reason applies to anything over the deductibles such as incidentals, overage fees and anything else that may occur will be covered by the additional funds from the deposit.

What is the cancellation policy should something come up?

Once you receive your confirmation email, you have 48 hours to cancel and you will receive a full refund. After the 48 hours your first two nights deposit (up to $300) will be kept. If the RV reservation was paid in full you will be refunded everything minus the reservation deposit. For any cancellation after the 48 hours, your account will be credited the amount you have paid and the reservation deposit will be valid toward a future rental at any of our locations. You are required to be paid in full 10 days before your rental. Any cancellation within the 10 days of your pickup date will not be refunded under any circumstances. Any monies collected towards your balance will be held for a future RV rental.

Is there a refund for an early return?

No. We have no way to rent the RV once it is returned early. The calendar would show unavailable.

Are there late fees for returning the vehicle late?

Yes. It is $100 for the first hour and $35 for each additional hour. Anything after 5pm is considered another night. Please read the rental agreement for more details.

Are there fees to run the generator?

Yes. In most cases it is only $2 /hour. But make sure to read each RV rental description for the exact cost. If you are renting a generator, it is $40 /day for unlimited use. If you are renting a travel trailer and do not have electrical hookups, it is highly recommended that you use an external generator with at least 2500 watts in the winter or 3500~4000 watts in the summer to run the AC. If you rent a generator from us, you must return the generator rental with a full tank of gas.

What is the extra mileage cost?

As of January 2022, the rates for Class C's are $0.50, for Class A's it is $0.50, for diesels it is $0.50.

Is there anywhere I am NOT allowed to drive the RV rental?

RV’s and motorhomes are supposed to be limited for use on paved roads. Hightened Path RV understands there are occasions when you need to take dirt roads to get to your destination. Just remember you are responsible for the tires on the RV should something happen. Trips into Mexico are not permitted. Also travel through extreme desert areas such as Death Valley during hot periods is very much prohibited. If you have specific questions please contact us. Take a look at this video explaining this topic, "Are there exceptions to where I can drive the RV rental?"

    Do you offer road-side assistance?

Currently Hightened Path RV does not have road side assistance. Hightened Path RV encourages you to get AAA, use your insurance or get some other type of road side assistance for your RV rental.

No. Hightened Path RV is not liable for any personal belongings while you are renting the RV. Hightened Path RV recommends you secure your valuables or do not bring them along.

What if I damage the RV or something inside?

First and foremost, please make sure you let your representative know what was damaged. Your personal insurance should cover any external damages you might encounter. If you are using Hightened Path RV’s insurance, any external damages will be covered. Interior damages are not covered under any insurance policy at this time. These types of damages will be deducted from your damage deposit since insurance does not cover interior incidentals.

What happens if I break down?

Hightened Path RV understands things happen. Please contact Hightened Path RV or the owner of the RV immediately. You are not authorized to perform any work on the RV rental. Depending on what is wrong Hightened Path RV will do our very best to get you back on the road. If it is no fault of your own or neglect and is just an RV issue we will cover the repairs. If it is determined that you, the renter is at fault, you will cover the repairs. If Hightened Path RV cannot get you back on the road, you will be refunded the difference for your remaining trip. We do not cover any hotels or car rentals.

Does the RV rental come with towels, sheets and pillows?

Yes and no! Yes, all of the motorhome, RV rentals come with bedding and towels. There is a set of four bath towels and four hand towels. Other than the bunk beds, each bed comes with one flat sheet, one fitted sheet, two pillows, two pillowcases and one comforter. Trailers & Towable RVs do not come with linens or towels. If you need a set for the towable RV or any additional sets, linens + towels are $15 /set for all RVs.

Does the RV rental come with pots, pans and cooking utensils?

Yes! All of the RV rentals come with basic kitchen and cooking utensils with no additional charge. We call it a "Kitchen Package". This is normally $25~$50/person at other companies.

Does the RV rental come with plates, bowls and flatware?

Not usually. Hightened Path does not stock the RV's with these items. These are hard to replace and most people do not like washing dishes while on vacation. Sometimes a customer will leave these items behind in the RV and we will leave them in the RV for the next customer to use. But, Hightened Path RV encourages people to bring their own reusable paper plates, bowls and plastic cups.

Does the RV rental come with food?

No, the RV rental does not come with any food. But we do offer a grocery pickup service before your trip, please ask a representative about this service. Hightened Path RV does turn the fridge on to get it cold so you can put food into the RV immediately. If you look at this map, it will show you grocery stores nearby.

Do I have to clean the RV rental?

**As of January 2022, you no longer need to clean the RV! You read this correct. We are now including the pressure wash, interior cleaning, dumping, water and propane with the Prep Fee. Just bring the RV back when you are done, and we will take care of the rest.**

What should I bring for my RV rental trip?

Here is a suggested list of things to take along on your RV rental trip.

Are the RV rentals cleaned and prepared?

Yes! The RV is always cleaned and ready to go for your rental. This is why we have a "Prep Fee".

    Can I use the awning?

No. We have had too many problems in the past with them and due to the costs associated, we do not allow them to be used. You are able to rent a canopy from us. Subject to availability. So sorry!

I’ve never driven a motorhome or RV before, do you provide any training?

Yes! A representative will assist you in driving around the parking lot and around the block until you feel comfortable handling the RV. They will go over all of the common concerns experienced while driving a motorhome or RV.

Do I need to hook the RV up to power, water and sewer at a campsite?

Not necessarily, but it is always a good idea to stay somewhere with ‘full hook-ups’. This will include electricity, water and sewer. TV and internet is completely optional. Having full hook-ups will limit your use on the generator to power your RV rental.

What if the campground or campsite doesn’t have any hook-ups?

If your location has no hook-ups, then you can run the generator, use the propane and use water from the fresh water reservoir. There is a fee to run the generator (see RV description for details), but this is not recommended. You can easily run out of these necessities depending on the length of your trip. If you are able, it is always best to find a location with ‘hook-ups.’

How long will the batteries last in the RV? Do I need to use the generator?

The battery / batteries in an RV are not designed to run the whole electrical system. They are designed to get you between powered locations. Meaning from one campsite to another or if you are dry camping from one night to the morning. You will have to use the generator or turn the engine on to keep the batteries charged.

How long will the generator last?

This depends on the size of the fuel tank for each RV. The generator runs off the same fuel as your engine but it will never go below a quarter (1/4) of a tank. This way you will not run out of fuel and be stranded somewhere. Usually the generator runs 2-4 hours per gallon of fuel.

Is smoking allowed in the RV rental?

No! Never does Hightened Path RV allow smoking in any of the RV rentals! There is a fee associated with this if there is any evidence of smoking inside one of the RV rentals.

What are the different types of RV rentals? What does each class represent?

Take a look at these blog videos answering this question. "What's the difference between RV classes?" & "RV Names, Terminology, and Classification."

    Class C
The class "C" motorhome is the workhorse of the RV rental business, comprising a vast majority of motorhome rentals. The class "C" models are generally designed for families and quite often offer more sleeping capacity then class "A" motor homes. They have driver / passenger side doors for easy access to the cockpit. They are easier to maneuver and have decent mpg. Most are built with a gas engine, but some newer models are coming out with diesel engines. You recognize a Class C RV because of its cab-over design.

    Class C Icon

    Class A
Class “A” motorhomes is very much in demand, and generally rent for more than class “C’s”. The challenge with Class A rentals is the size and complexity. They are a bit harder to drive but there is direct access to the cockpit area and the rest of the motorhome whereas a Class C has a more secluded cockpit. Many larger class "A" motorhomes are "diesel pushers". This means that the engine is diesel, has more power for towing and climbing and located in the rear of the vehicle. Driving a powerful diesel pusher is a memorable experience. You recognize a Class A motorhome because it looks like a straight block on wheels.

    Class A Icon

    Class B
Class “B” motorhomes are van conversions, and always in demand. Van conversions are smaller, easier to drive, and can go places that larger motorhomes cannot. Yet they only sleep 3 - 5 comfortably. But they can carry up to 10 people comfortably for a long distance trip! You recognize a Class B because it looks like a large van or delivery van with a roof ac.

    Class B Icon

    Travel and Tent Trailers
There is constant demand for towable RVs. The popularity, price and simplicity of towable RVs make them a profitable rental vehicle. The fact that the renter drives his own vehicle simplifies the rental. The popularity of SUV’s makes towing easier than ever. Validate the compatibility of the renter’s hitch and wiring harness in advance. Make sure that you have the ability to get wiring or hitch modifications made locally. Larger travel trailers have trailer brakes which must be connected to the renter's tow vehicle. Tent trailers are very popular rentals. They are very easy to tow, and can be taken into campsites that conventional travel trailers cannot access.

Travel Trailer Icon Tent Popup Trailer Icon

    Toy Haulers
Toy Haulers are increasingly popular with renters who ride motorcycles or ATV's. These toys can be driven into the back of the motorhome for travel. That space is reclaimed as living space when the motorhome is parked, and the toys are outside. These get requested quite often.

    Toy Hauler Trailer Icon

    Fifth Wheels
Fifth wheel camper trailers are not the first choice of most renters; at some locations they are being successfully rented. The towing vehicle needs to be a large pickup truck with a specialized hitch mounted in the bed. Hightened Path RV Rentals does not rent fifth wheels.

    Fifth Wheel Icon

    Slide-in Truck Campers
Slide-in truck campers are very popular in the RV community but very rare in the rental industry. They are not the first choice of most renters. Basically there is a stand alone camper shell that slides in the back of a pickup truck. In these situations, the renter would be taking the existing truck that goes with the slide-in camper. Hightened Path RV Rentals does not rent slide-in campers at this time.

    Slide-in Truck Camper Icon

What is the minimum number of nights for the RV rental?

Two is the minimum number of nights on all driveable motor homes. If it is for a one day concert or sporting event you will still be charged the 2 night minimum. Trailers and towables are a 3 night minimum.

What is the maximum number of nights for an RV rental?

Unlimited as long as there is no one else that has booked the RV.

How many nights in advance do I need to book the RV rental?

Hightened Path RV prefers a week in advance, but if your license checks out ok we can do a one days notice.

Do I need a special license to drive the RV?

No. Unless the RV is a semi-truck or another type of special diesel, you do not need any special classes on your license. "Class A" motorhome does not refer to your driver's license type. Take a look at this video, "Do I need a special license to drive an RV?"

What the average miles per gallon (mpg) on an RV rental?

6-10 is the average mpg(s) on a Class A or Class C motorhome. Class B will get 15-20 mpg’s depending on the model. See the description for more details.

Do I need to wash the outside of RV rental?

**As of January 2022, you no longer need to wash the RV! You read this correct. We are now including everything with the Prep Fee.**

Are pets allowed in the RV rental?

Yes, but there is a one time $150 non refundable pet fee, up to two pets. If bringing additional pets, please call for full details. This is to steam clean the carpets and upholstery and any other additional time to clean the pet hair. There are other rules that apply as well; you can read them all here.

What happens if I get pulled over?

You are responsible for any and all citations while using the RV rental. The insurance card and registration is in each RV for your convenience. Please let us know if this happens to make sure it doesn’t get put on the owner.

Does everyone need a seatbelt? Does my infant or child need a car seat / seatbelt?

Not necessarily. This is a personal preference and RVs are considered to be like sitting in a bus. The passengers in the front seat do require to wear seatbelts but passengers in the rear is completely up to you. Infants and toddlers are required to be in a car seat. Of course we recommend that every passenger uses a seatbelt and we absolutely recommend using a car seat and seatbelt for your infant or young child.

What kind of gasoline do I use for the RV rental?

In Colorado we ask that you use a mid grade octane or higher and when you are at sea level please use a higher octane especially in places like Arizona were it gets hotter.

Does the RV rental have manual or automatic transmission(s)?

Currently all of the RV rentals have automatic transmissions.

Where do I go to dump the tanks or fill the propane for the RV rental?

You can usually do this at a park or a campground where you are staying. But if this is unavailable you can search for ‘RV Dump Stations’ or ‘Propane Fill Stations’ online. Here is a map of locations located in Colorado Springs area.

Can I park my vehicle at the pick-up location?

Yes. Hightened Path RV provides a secure storage facility to park your vehicle during your rental, free of charge. There is a release of liability you need to sign to do this.

Do you have one way rentals?

We do offer unique one-way trips. The cost for this will vary for each trip. Please contact the office or fill out a quote form requesting a one-way rental.

Where can I park / stay at night if I haven’t reached my destination?

24 hour Wal-Mart Supercenters, Casinos and Rest Stops are the most common places to stay. Always let the manager or someone know that you will be there for the night. Always make sure you are parked in a safe environment.

Can I tow something behind the RV rental?

Yes. There is a $75 one time fee associated with towing anything with wheels attached. Trailers, flatbeds, car dolly, a vehicle, etc.

Do you offer pickup and delivery? What about setup and teardown?

Yes. The cost is $150 /hour to have the RV rental delivered. If you need it to be returned the same cost applies. For example, you are arriving at the Denver International Airport (DIA) and you need to be picked up in the RV, the cost is $450 round trip (to be delivered and then picked up when you return). This does not include your fuel. The renter covers the fuel expense to get the RV wherever it needs to go. Delivery times are not guaranteed! We cannot pick up or drop off outside of our normal business hours. We make our best attempt to arrive at the specified times, due to many unforeseen circumstances, we arrive as soon as possible. Setup and tear down are $35 a piece.

Can I pickup the RV early or the night before?

Yes. There is a $75 charge for Class C and a $75 charge for Class A and a $50 charge for a Trailer. This does NOT include insurance. You cannot add this option immediately to your reservation. We check weekly to see if the unit is available for an early pickup. If you would like this option, please check with us the week before your reservation.

Do I have to wash the linens?

No. This is included with the Prep Fee. You are welcome to do this but you are not required to. We have the linens professionally cleaned after a customer has used them.

Do I have to wash and clean the silverware, utensils, coffee pot etc.

Yes. We ask every customer that whatever you use, please wash it for the next guest. At this time, our team doesn't swap the kitchen package sets. So please wash what you use so the next customer can enjoy!
